In 1653, Jean Jacques Chifflet wrote a pamphlet on the medical uses of the powdered bark of Peruvian plants in the cinchona genus, which were used by the Quechua in treating malaria and other ailments (it is still used for production of quinine). The Jesuit Honoré Fabri wrote this pamphlet in response two years later under the pseudonym Antino Conygo. Included is the text of Chifflet's earlier pamphlet, "Pulvis Febrifugus Orbis Americani . . . Ventilatus Ratione, Experientia, Auctoriatate," as issued with a separate 1653 title page but continuous pagination, pages [45]-88. European Americana 655/62; Sabin 12689 (for the 1653 first edition of Chifflet); Waring, Bibliotheca Therapeutica, page 337. No copies traced at auction. Provenance: inscription reading "Donate dal P. Fabri penitentier a S. Pietro gisuita" over stamped arms, apparently those of Cardinal Camillo Massimo (1620-1677); and on verso, an inscription reading "Ex dono ill[ustrissi]mi d[omi]ni commendatarij a Puteo hac die 26 Junii 1681, Joannes Baptista Marinella Armengol."
